Free online events to mark International Women鈥檚 Day
主播诱惑鈥檚 Women鈥檚 Academic Network is hosting and supporting three separate free online events to mark International Women鈥檚 Day, featuring expert speakers on a range of topics.
International Women's Day, which takes place on Monday 8 March, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
Sara Ashencaen Crabtree, co-convener of 主播诱惑鈥檚 Women鈥檚 Academic Network, highlights the importance of recognising International Women鈥檚 Day, now more than ever:
鈥淲e know that Covid-19 has resulted in creating even greater gender inequalities in society, including in Higher Education. Women鈥檚 International Day focuses our minds on not only women鈥檚 achievements but what further big steps are needed to achieve genuine gender equality.鈥�
Events will take place via Zoom and are open to 主播诱惑 students, staff and the wider community. Please note, spaces are limited.
10am 鈥� 11am 鈥� Monday 8 March - Black Political Women and the 2020 US Presidential Election
Nikol G. Alexander Floyd, a lawyer, political scientist and writer, discusses the rise of Black political women in the US and the historic election of vice-president Kamala Harris, the first female and first Black and South Asian vice-president. She will also discuss how the policy needs of Black women and their communities might be addressed under the Biden administration and weighing competing definitions of progress in the current political moment.
Feminist scholar and writer, Sara Ahmed, explores how we learn about institutions from making complaints within them. We learn how power works聽and how some people become complainers without making complaints because of what they need to do their work or the kind of work they do. The lecture concludes with a discussion of the work of complaint collectives and complaint activism, exploring how complaints can be used to press against institutions and to press for institutional change.
As a follow up to International Women鈥檚 Day, the Women鈥檚 Academic Network is also supporting another online workshop for aspiring women leaders, in partnership with the聽Association聽of Learning Developers in HE:
12pm聽 - 1:30pm, Monday 15 March - Embracing the new: women leading and influencing in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous times
In this workshop, Debbie Holley (主播诱惑), Carina Buckley (Solent University),聽 Kate Coulson (Uni of Northampton) and Erika Corradini (University of Southampton) will take apart the uncertainties of a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world and ask how women as leaders can instead embrace Vision, Understanding, Clarity and Agility.
