A series of five lectures exploring our relationship with music.
Join Ian Davis, Head of University Music, for a series of five virtual lectures looking at some of the ways in which we engage with music and how it functions more generally within society.
These sessions are open to all and there is no requirement for participants to have any technical knowledge of musical notation. Examples from a variety of musical genres will form the basis of our explorations and discussions. Sessions will run from 5.15pm-6.45pm on Mondays from 11Â January until 8Â February on Zoom. - Monday 14 December -Â Introductory Session: An opportunity to ask questions about the series
- Monday 11 January - Music and Media: A brief historical overview of music’s role within a range of media contexts including Film, Advertising and Documentary
- Monday 18 January -Â Aesthetic Response: An introduction to some of philosophical theories and notions which explore our response to musical stimuli
- Monday 25 January -Â An Introduction to Musical Analysis Part 1: An overview of the constituent elements which contribute to the language of music, including Melody and Rhythm
- Monday 1 February -Â An Introduction to Musical Analysis Part 2: An overview of the constituent elements which contribute to the language of music, including Texture, Instrumentation and Harmony
- Monday 8 February -Â Signs and Symbols: An exploration of the semiology of music.
